What is depression?
Depression is a condition of feeling low, sad and lost. It is normal to feel sad at times. But if you are constantly sad, low and hopeless, you probably are depressed. Many people don’t consider depression as something real, people often don’t take mental health seriously. But depression is real and mental health should be taken seriously. Recently, we all were shocked by the untimely death of Sushant Singh Rajput, as he committed suicide the possible reason being depression. It is a warning alarm for all those who don’t consider mental health problems as a real problem. You see, depression can make someone take their own lives. It is important to address mental health.
Whenever you are depressed or sad you must try to reach out. Don’t be afraid of being judged or not being heard. There’s always someone to listen to you. If you feel lonely and no one to talk to you, talk to a stranger. Sometimes a stranger can be your saviour. Whenever no matter at what time you find yourself hopeless and suicidal just talk to someone, anyone for that matter. Just reach out!
How to reach out?
Whom should you talk to when you are feeling sad and depressed or you are facing any mental issues?
· Talk to your friends or family
Talking to your friends and family should be your first preference. They love you and they care for you, they’ll definitely help you out. The love, support and empathy you will get from your family member or friend will make you feel much better. Don’t directly say that you are depressed it might be overwhelming for them, Instead explain your feelings, talk to them about your struggles etc. They will surely empathize and help you through.
· Ask support
If you aren’t willing to talk to any of your close ones for the fear of being judged or not being understood. Try to ask support from NGOs that are working for a mental health issue, if you are feeling suicidal there are many groups available to listen to you 24×7. You just need to contact them.
· Take inspiration from others’ stories
When you are depressed, try reading the stories of people who have overcome depression and are now living a normal life. Reading such stories will make you understand that this is just the phase and it shall pass. Harming yourself will only pass your pain to your closed ones.
· See a psychiatrist
If you are unable to cope up with the depression yourself you need to see the psychiatrist. Believe me, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Seeing a therapist is for your better health and others have nothing to do with it. A therapist will guide you through and out of depression. So don’t fear the judgement of people.
A small note to everyone who is not facing depression or even if you yourself are going through depression, just be kind and always be there for your loved once.
