Scientists used to believe that the brain finished developing around the age of 25. A recent study has uncovered something called neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to rearrange itself over time by generating new neural connections. Our intelligence is no longer restricted by our age! That may come as no surprise to individuals of a certain age, but new research shows that mindfulness aids brain development significantly. The insula, which is triggered when you become aware of your body and emotions, develops thicker layers of neurons in people who practice mindfulness and meditation. Parts of the prefrontal cortex (the region of the brain that controls attention) are also enhanced.
Researchers connected people up to a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner and analyzed the brain’s response to a variety of socially distressing scenarios, according to the findings of a 2018 study. The fMRI revealed how mindfulness impacts various brain areas. Because consciousness and emotion are mediated by different brain regions, awareness does not need emotion. When we notice a mistake, our amygdala is automatically activated and we experience an emotional response. The prefrontal cortex is activated and the amygdala is calmed when we become aware of our reaction. When a negative emotion is triggered, mindfulness can help you control your emotions by modifying your neurobiological reactions. Change your brain with your mind!
Because the prefrontal cortex regulates our concentration and attention span, focus on what you enjoy. It’s a strong method to keep your prefrontal cortex happy when you focus on what you like about yourself and others.
