Following the devastating effects of the Second World War, in 1945 the United Nations (UN) was created with the aim to maintain international peace and security.
The UN works towards preventing conflicts, helps to build peace among the conflicting parties, deploying peacekeepers, and creating an environment to hold peace. Maintaining peace and security is the prime responsibility of the UN Security Council.
1) Security Council
Its role is to determine any posing threats or an act of aggression to peace. It connects with conflicting parties to settle down the dispute in a peaceful way and suggest methods to resolve it.
They are permitted to take enforcement measures such as economic sanctions and international military action in order to maintain and restore international peace and security.
2) General Assembly
The policymaker and representative part of the United Nations is the General Assembly who provides forums for the Member States so that they can express their views and find consensus on difficult matters.
They make recommendations on maintaining peace and security by disarmament and also discuss it with the Security Council. It has the power to take action if the Security Council fails to fulfill its role.
3) Secretary-General
The Secretary General brings the attention of the Security Council to any pressing matters that threaten international peace and security. It takes steps to prevent impartiality and integrity in international disputes to arise or escalate out of hand.
The conflict prevention strategies adopted by the UN are preventive diplomacy and preventive disarmaments to avoid the conflicts from spreading and reoccurring.
