Peace of mind comes when you learn how to deal with it. Life can put you through testing times, but it is your ability to cope with these testing or difficult times that help you achieve your peace of mind. Rather than responding to everything, one must try to achieve calmness. You might find it difficult to stay calm when you are in the middle of a stressful situation. But even if you aren’t genuinely calm and if you fake it, it can still be contagious enough to spread it to the people around you. And when you see calmness all around you, you will feel surreal and it will bring it true calmness.
A peaceful, clear mind is sometimes compared to a still pond beneath a full moon in various spiritual traditions. The smooth surface is translucent, enabling moonlight to shine through and highlight the pond’s bottom. Our minds, on the other hand, are not always clear.
We sincerely want to calm things down, but instead of allowing things to calm down on their own, we wind up making it far worse. We often put stones (our negative thoughts) into our ponds without recognizing them, never allowing them to return to their original state of calm.
Quit reacting when something or someone is causing you distress. Take a few deep breaths and pause for a moment. Begin to pay attention to your thoughts and write down the ones that are bothering you. Don’t disregard them; instead, pay attention to them. Take a deep breath if you detect anger or hatred forming in your head. Allow it to go.
When you get the opportunity, put this into practice. Not only does cultivating calmness have a significant impact on your own mental state, but you never know how much of an impact you may have on those around you.
