If there’s one thing that keeps most of us from achieving our dreams, it’s guilt and the “I’m not good enough” mentality we’ve developed through the years. These emotions are notorious for destroying all we set out to do and everything we want for. If we continue to hold on to these emotions, they will keep us trapped in a depressing environment.
The truth is that no one is born with guilt feelings. Whatever we have with us at any given time is a result of what we’ve learned as children. It could be a member of our family or someone else we’ve met.
If you feel stuck in guilt and shame, try these tips for embracing it.
We tend to believe that if we just pretend it never happened, everything would go away. It sounds nice…but it’s not true. Decide to get out of denial. Be open and honest about how you’ve gone wrong and the implications of your actions. Make a list of the exact behaviors and activities that are bothering you.
As a flawed human, you’ll make mistakes in life. Yes, you are correct. Others will be harmed as a result of your actions. You’ll regret it. When you live in a less-than-ideal world, it’s unavoidable. On the other side, you need to make a choice.
Either you accept your past for what it is and get the freedom to go on and enjoy the present, or you will be trapped in a cycle of guilt and shame. Don’t underestimate the value of self-acceptance for your mental health.
Silence can be lethal when it comes to guilt. So, stop acting. Break free from the shackles of holding it all in. Discuss what is tearing you apart on the inside. Express your feelings to a trusted counselor, mentor, or friend. Forgiveness begins with being honest and vulnerable about who you are, flaws and all. So say what needs to be said.
Don’t cling to your guilt. You are not required to justify or prove your previous actions. Letting go of the past entails burying it and relinquishing your right to self-condemnation. Forgiveness is both a choice and a process. It is choosing to see yourself as a valuable human being rather than hating and tearing yourself down.
Either you accept your history for what it is and experience the freedom to move on and enjoy the present, or you will be stuck in a rut of guilt and shame. Don’t miss out on self-acceptance because it’s important for your emotional health.
