We often forget to be grateful for the things we do have in our efforts to improve ourselves and transform our society. We spend so much time focusing on the negative that we forget about the positive.
Here is a list of small and large things for which we should be grateful because gratitude is a virtue in and of itself.
It is a gift, regardless of how you perceive it. Many others never have the opportunity to progress as far as you have. Thousands of people die each year as a result of disease, poverty, famines, and droughts, but you were fortunate. You must live, survive, exist, and have the ability to dream. Be thankful for what you have.
If you are reading this from wherever you are, you are already in a better position than the hundreds of millions of people who are unable to eat two square meals per day. Be thankful for what you have.
It’s the family you chose. Consider the inside jokes, embarrassing moments, late-night phone calls, and the fact that they’ve got your back at all times. Be thankful for the priceless relationship you have.
Your most ardent supporters and harshest critics. The only beings capable of loving you more than you could possibly love them. Be grateful to your parents for their unwavering support, encouragement, strength, and love. Be grateful for the chance at life that they provided you.
You’ve been around for a long time and have come a long way. Despite heartbreaks and agony, disappointment and failure, you succeeded. And yet, here you are, alert, energized, and ready to go. Remember to be thankful for whatever it is that motivates you to get out of bed and face the world. Be grateful for the courage, regardless of your motivation, ambitions, or God.
The fact that you didn’t fall apart at all. That time you smiled for the family portrait despite the fact that all you wanted to do was weep, but you didn’t. Be grateful for your ability to persevere in the face of adversity and suffering.
It’s a complicated science, but it’s also a good buddy. In a fraction of a second, your mind can roam to unknown destinations and then return to the present. It keeps you thinking, hoping, and dreaming. It is, in essence, a component of who you are.
Your heart is like the spirit of a three-year-old, scared, hurt, healed, and ready for more of the same. It bounces back no matter how much it takes. Your life could be jeopardized if it came to a halt even for a second. Be grateful for your heart’s tenacity.
To touch, smell, see and experience all of the wonderful sensations we take for granted. Consider a day when you were unable to feel anything. Consider how miserable it would be if you couldn’t taste anything. Consider how much beauty you’d miss out on if you couldn’t see. Be grateful for your senses, which allow you to enjoy the beauty of the world.
Everything you enjoy brings you happiness. It becomes a part of you and has the ability to make you laugh or cry. Thank it for being there and having an impact on your life.
