Racial discrimination and injustice has the power to affect one’s happiness. It can take an emotional toll and leads to chronic stress, anxiety, depression and other racial traumas.
When the news headline pops up with various social horrifying images such as police brutality against a specific race and protests tends to affect one’s mental peace.
People with a colour, face negatives such as poverty, unemployment, incarceration and even abuse.
The contributions of the black and minority people in the history and culture are often overlooked by the society, additionally, the social media focuses more on the negative racial stereotypes.
Depending on your skin color, various financial institutions decide whether to grant a person the credit or not, or whether to charge them more. During an economic fallout, the blacks or the minority community are mostly likely to face the brunt of it. All these factors of racism contribute to affecting one’s happiness and peace.
Racism still disrupts one’s mental peace as some forms of racism still pervades in today’s world. It is clearly visible when a guard follows you in the store due to your color or when a white person reframes from seating beside you or holds their bags tighter in local transportation. These micro aggression in the community leads to overwhelming stress and makes the person feel devalued as a human being.
Since racsim is often used to devalue a person, you can counter it and deflect the pain of it by embracing your ethnicity, heritage and take pride in your culture which will bring you inner peace and happiness.
