Bullies come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Most of us, whether as children or adults, will have to deal with a bully or two at some point in our lives. According to recent data, one out of every four youngsters is subjected to bullying at some point in their lives. Bullying is a problem for people in the job, at home, in the military, in hospitals, and even in nursing homes. Bullies must be dealt with carefully, and the cycle of bullying must be broken.
React to their bullying in a non-aggressive manner. If you can, avoid showing any reaction and simply walk away. Bullies get pleasure from inflicting pain or discomfort on others, thus reacting to them will only encourage them. The bully craves attention, and if you demonstrate that they are emotionally harming you, they will enjoy it even more.
Everybody has strength and courage; the trouble with bullying is that many bullies try to convince you that you don’t have it and that you’re a lesser person as a result. It’s not true; be wary of those who try to make you feel weak by belittling you.
Make sure you report bullying to the appropriate authorities if you haven’t already. Furthermore, if there is something you require to progress, speak up and request it. Self-advocacy skills are essential for healing, but they also aid in the development of self-esteem and the regaining of control over one’s life.
The longer a bully has control over a victim, the more powerful his grip gets. Bullying frequently begins in a mild form, such as name-calling, teasing, or little physical aggression. The aggressiveness escalates once the bully has tested the waters and determined that the victim would not tell an adult or stand up for his rights.
The trick is to maintain a pleasant and professional demeanor while remaining strong in your boundaries. Allowing the bully to get under your skin is exactly what he wants. Practice your answer so you’ll be ready the next time something unexpected occurs and you’ll be able to react quickly without becoming emotional. Keep it clear and direct, such as “I don’t think your tone is acceptable.”
