The World Happiness Index measures happiness globally and how much people think of themselves to be content.
To evaluate and rank the happiness of the world, it takes into consideration the six features of each country. They are GDP per capita, life expectancy, freedom to make choices, generosity, social support, and perception of corruption, as per the reports of Governance now.
According to the World Happiness Report, India’s rank on the Happiness Index has declined over the years. In 2013, India ranked 111 and it consistently took a deteriorating path by positioning itself on 139 ranked as per the 2021 reports.
It saw a dip of 25% irrespective of the government’s continuous efforts towards economic progression and India’s fastest-growing economies in the world.
The per capita GDP of India has stayed at the low of 102 and has continued to remain the same even though there has been an increase in the GDP over the past four years. The increase in population has canceled out the rise in GDP.
Despite India being the pharma capital in the world with rising health care facilities, there has been a marginal improvement in the Life Expectancy rates.
However, in intangible sections such as Generosity and Freedom to make choices, India has observed a good improvement, ranging from 56 in 2018 to 37 in 2021. The problem of corruption has remained on the rise.
Even though India has been the fastest developing country it has dipped a lot in the happiness score over the years and amidst the pandemic, it worsened more than ever.
Therefore, in challenging times, India needs to harden up and divert its attention on the intangible criteria and happiness as well.
