When a baby suddenly starts crying at night or while sleeping, parents often wonder if their baby is having a nightmare. Babies do have dreams and they are related to all the learning and processing they have experienced throughout the day.
There is a possibility that a baby may try to process the birth experience or other experiences that he might have felt traumatic which may have slipped your notice. When babies are surrounded by a loving, nurturing, and secure environment, they are less likely to feel traumatic.
It is rare for newborn babies to have a night terror. However, we don’t really believe that little ones have nightmares or bad dreams because babies usually cry for multiple reasons.
When your little one is hungry or needs a diaper change, he will probably start cribbing and crying. Additionally, babies also cry with their eyes closed and when you try to grab their attention, they won’t respond to you. This happens in the case of confusional arousal, it is similar to sleeping, walking, or talking. A baby tries to do things that he would do when he is awake while he is actually sleeping.
Confusional arousal is normal and there is nothing to worry about. However, if your baby is crying out during the night due to something that is causing him physical discomfort, it is better to consult a health care provider.
Night terrors or nightmares are common in preschool kids of the age of 3 to 4 years old.
