The terms binge eating and overeating are often used interchangeably but they are quite different.
Both these types of eating causes stress.
The serious mental health condition is binge eating. Overeating is normal and you tend to practice this eating pattern when you are bored or stressed. During special occasions, you also eat more even when you are full.
However, overeating becomes a concern when it turns into binge eating. Having an extra serving of food on a special occasion is normal but constantly eating large amounts of food may indicate some underlying condition.
Therefore overeating is not the same as binge eating. Overeating is occasional whereas binge eating is more frequent. People with binge eating disorder often eat to feel good even if they are not hungry.
In binge eating, you binge regularly that is twice a week for six months. You have no physiological cues like hunger and fullness. When you are sad or angry, you go ahead and eat. When you are not binge eating, you won’t feel attached to your eating. People who binge eat tend to experience decreased mood and low self worth. Their eating patterns also affect their relationships and productivity at work.
Binge eating can cause emotional complications such as anxiety, social isolation and depression. They also experience various medical complications like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease.
Additionally, eating large amounts of food can cause you shame, regret, guilt or sadness afterwards if you are a binge eater.
