Must Read: What Is Compassion Fatigue?

Compassion fatigue, also known as second-hand shock or secondary stress reaction, is a type of stress that occurs as a result of assisting or wanting to assist others who have been traumatised or are experiencing substantial emotional distress.

Compassion fatigue symptoms are heightened manifestations of chronic stress as a result of the work we choose to conduct as caregivers. According to J. Eric Gentry, a leading traumatologist, people who are drawn to care giving often enter the field with symptoms of compassion fatigue.

The motive could be a deep identification with helpless, suffering, or traumatised humans or animals. It’s not uncommon for us to come from a tradition of “other-directedness.” Simply put, we were taught to take care of the needs of people around us before our own. Our lives have been devoid of genuine, long-term self-care activities.

If we have a strong feeling that we are suffering from compassion fatigue, chances are we are. Our journey to wellbeing starts with a single modest step. Awareness. A higher level of awareness might lead to new insights into prior traumas and traumatic circumstances that are relieving themselves inside the boundaries of our symptoms and habits.

We can go on a path of self-discovery with the right information and help, mending previous traumas that are currently preventing us from living a healthy, happy life. There are a plethora of materials currently accessible to assist us in recognising the symptoms and causes of compassion fatigue.

Regular exercise, healthy eating habits, highly functional relationships, engaging social activities, journaling, and restful sleep are all good ways to start healing. Hopefully, the material on this page will be useful to you and will assist you in starting your healing process.

Accepting that compassion fatigue exists in our life only serves to confirm that we are profoundly loving people. The truth will emerge sometime along our healing journey: we don’t have to choose. While properly caring for others, it is possible to conduct healthy, continual self-care.
