Rib cage functions to protect the organs that lie below it. There are a total 24 ribs, 12 on the right side and 12 on left.
The organs that lie under the left rib cage are left lungs, heart, pancreas, stomach, spleen and left kidney. You might experience pain under your left rib cage when any of these organs get infected, inflamed or damaged. Just because your heart is on the left side, feeling a pain radiating off in that area does not mean you are prone to heart attack.
When there is an inflammation in the cartilage that joins ribs and breastbone, it is known as costochondritis condition. It may happen either due to infection, arthritis or any physical injury. You may experience a sharp, stabbing pain on your left rib cage and might get worse with coughing or sneezing.
An inflammation to your pancreas is referred to as pancreatitis condition that occurs due to alcohol abuse, injury or gallstones. The pain can be caused after eating and may either come or go or be constant.
Spleen ruptures can lead to extreme pain near your left rib cage and the area around might also feel tender to touch. Enlarged spleen can be caused due to viral infections like mononucleosis, bacterial or parasite infections and liver or blood diseases.
In such cases, you might experience low blood pressure, blurry vision, dizziness and nausea. It occurs due to trauma and hence is recommended to seek medical care immediately.
