The temporary feelings of numbness, prickling or itching on the extremities of the body that you experience is known as Paresthesia which is commonly referred to as pins and needles.
Temporary pins and needles occur when a weight is being put on a specific part of the body that stops the blood supply in the nerves. This symptom can be eased after lifting off the weight.
However, the chronic pins and needles in feet are an indication of some underlying diseases such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy and multiple sclerosis which require medical attention.
Following are the conditions that are responsible for pins and needles in the feet.
Diabetic person is likely to suffer nerve damage and as a result they may experience tingling in their feet which later radiates to legs, arms and hands.
It includes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Ulna, radial nerve and peroneal nerve palsies.
Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to pernicious anemia which leads to peripheral neuropathy. Excessive amounts of vitamin B6 can also cause prickling in the feet.
Inhaling toxic and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic and other industrial hazardous materials can cause prickling. The antibiotic, antiviral and chemotherapy given for lung cancer are the leading cause of it.
Injury that is related to trauma causes compression and crushing of nerves which lead to pain as well as prickling in the feet. The treatment of the long lasting paresthesia depends on the diagnosis of the underlying cause of the pins and needles in the feet.
