Pros & Cons Of Consuming Pork

Pig meat is a type of red meat, which is consumed worldwide. It is a good source of nutrients and if consumed in proper proportion it can make a healthy diet.

Pros:

  • Pork is a good source of protein, niacin, iron and zinc.
  • It is also considered a good source of vitamins and minerals like phosphorus, selenium, and thiamine.
  • Vitamins B6 and B12 which are essential for blood cell formation and brain function are also found abundantly in pork.
  • It is also an excellent source of high-quality protein.
  • Pork is considered to be effective for growth and maintenance of muscle mass and it also helps to improve muscle function.
  • It contains the amino acid beta-alanine, which helps our body to form a compound named carnosine, which is important for muscle function.
  • Pork is suggested for breastfeeding women as it helps in milk production.

Cons:

  • It is high in sodium and saturated fats, which are the two things that must be avoided for a healthy diet.
  • It is not easy to digest.
  • It has higher amounts of histamine than other types of meat and in some cases can cause allergic reactions.
  • Pork contains a very large amount of cholesterol and consumption of too much cholesterol can lead to deposits in vessels that can cause arteriosclerosis.
  • Consumption of raw or undercooked pork can lead to parasitic infections and trichinosis.
  • Consumption of processed pork like ham, bacon and sausages can lead to the problem of cancer.
