A weak or poor pelvic floor means a lack of control of the muscles of your pelvic floor. It is often referred to as pelvic floor dysfunction. The group of muscles and ligaments in the pelvic region are known as the pelvic floor.
The organs in your pelvic floor such as the bladder, rectum, and uterus, or prostate are supported by the pelvic floor.
When these muscles are contracted and relaxed, you can control your bowel movements and urination. Due to the weak pelvic floor, your muscles are forced to contract rather than relax which creates a problem in bowel movement. It is necessary to treat this condition because it may cause discomfort and long-term colon damage.
There are many symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. If you have a weak pelvic floor, then you may experience the following symptoms:
1. Experience various urinary issues such as a strong urge to urinate. You may even experience pain while urinating.
2. There are high chances of lower back pain in such cases.
3. Weak pelvic floor can cause constipation and strains in bowel movement.
4. You might experience pain in your pelvic region or rectum.
5. Muscles spasms in the pelvis and extreme pressure in the pelvic region or rectum.
Although the exact cause of pelvic floor dysfunction is being researched, doctors believe that this condition is caused due to various events which weaken the pelvic muscles and or tear the connective tissues.
Childbirth, injury to the pelvic region, pelvic surgery, obesity, and nerve damage can cause pelvic floor dysfunction.
