Assist in the relief of a sore throat.

A saltwater gargle might temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat by dissolving 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water. Children under six years of age are unlikely to be able to correctly gargle. Ice chips, sore throat sprays, lozenges, and hard sweets are also options. Children can choke on lozenges or hard sweets, so use caution when offering these to them. Children under the age of six should not be given lozenges or hard candy.

Combat suffocation.

Stuffiness and congestion can be relieved with over-the-counter saline nasal drops and sprays. Experts recommend inserting several saline drops in one nostril and gently suctioning it with a bulb syringe in babies. Squeeze the bulb, then gently insert the syringe tip into the nose approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch (about 6 to 12 millimeters) and gradually release the bulb. In older children, saline nasal sprays may be used.

Warm liquids should be consumed.

Consuming chicken soup, tea, warm apple juice, or other warm liquids as a cold cure may be a good option and may alleviate congestion by boosting mucus movement.

Honey is a good option.

Coughs in children and adults over the age of one may be cured by honey. You could mix honey with hot tea.

Increase the amount of moisture in the air.

A cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer can help relieve congestion by adding moisture to your house.
