Anxiety and fear can cause shortness of breath, as well as panic and worry. Before booking, find a quiet place to sit or lie down and breathe deeply for a few minutes. Spend your time focusing solely on inhalation and exhalation movements to calm your mind and keep your imagination from escaping. If you start feeling anxious again after seeing your dentist, ask if it takes a minute or two to sit in a chair and check your breathing habits.
Call the clinic before making an appointment and ask if you can make an appointment with your dentist. This is especially useful when visiting a new dentist, as visiting strangers can increase anxiety. Previous visits will help you get to know your dentist a little better. You will also have the possibility to discuss your fears and plan your next appointment.
If you feel anxiety is increasing, do not be afraid to take a break after starting treatment, especially if the treatment may continue for some time. Before you start, signal your hands to your dentist. This is an easy way to let them know when you need a break.
Distractions such as watching Netflix, listening to music, and listening to podcasts and audiobooks give you more things to think about than what the dentist is doing. It is also possible that the session will expire sooner. If done within half an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, or before reaching track 5 on the latest Taylor Swift album, it feels much faster than notifying you that you have 15 or 20 minutes left.
