Alzheimer’s disease is often misunderstood as a mental disorder. That’s not the case! It’s a lethal brain disease caused by a physical medical problem that worsens over time. As patients progress through the stages of Alzheimer’s, the disease has an impact on how people think, feel, and act. While Alzheimer’s disease is a medical condition, its symptoms can cause psychological issues such as despair, anxiety, and stress in patients, family members, and carers. A person with dementia may experience memory loss and confusion about time, making a few moments seem like hours, and they may only feel comfortable if someone specific is around.
People with Alzheimer’s disease have more memory loss and other cognitive impairments as the disease develop. Wandering and getting lost are common problem, as are difficulties handling money and paying bills, repeating inquiries, taking longer to do daily tasks, and personality and behavior changes.
Alzheimer’s disease can have long-term consequences for both loved ones and the individual.
There are situations where Alzheimer patients have suicidal thoughts, and because they don’t have control over their bodies, they tend to take that drastic step, which can be fatal.
People with Alzheimer lose basic senses such as controlling bowel movement, difficulty in eating and swallowing, having trouble changing positions or moving around without help and bladder issues.
They are also unable to create new memories or perform basic math calculations.
If you see any of these symptoms in a family member, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.
