The presence of Red Blood Cells (RBC) in the urine is medically known as hematuria. RBC can be present in the urine even if a person cannot see it. It is a symptom of underlying health conditions.
Causes:
There can be a number of reasons for the presence of RBCs in the urine. Some are as follows
- Infection in kidney
- Bladder infection
- Kidney stones
- Urinary tract infection
- Vigorous or strenuous exercise
- Kidney, bladder or prostate cancer
- Enlarged prostate
- Rhabdomyolysis – when muscles are damaged it causes substances from the muscles to leak into the blood.
- Medicines like antibiotics, aspirin, and blood thinners are also one reason.
Symptoms:
- Hematuria leads to red or pink-colored urine. It is so due to the presence of red blood cells.
- The blood is used to produce urine and it is not even painful.
- Discharge of blood clots through urine. It can be painful.
There are often no other symptoms of blood urine.
Diagnosis & Treatments:
You need to undergo a few treatments to find out the cause for bloody urine;
- Your medical history is researched in a physical exam.
- Urine tests are carried out to check for any infections.
- Imaging test is essential to find out the cause of hematuria.
- Cystoscopy – a tiny camera is used to examine your urinary bladder or urethra.
- Antibodies are suggested to clear out urinary tract infections.
- Prescribe medication to shrink the enlarged prostate.
- Shock therapy to break bladder or kidney stones.
