What Is A Bipolar Disorder & Its Symptoms

Bipolar disorder is a mental condition characterized by rapid mood swings from high to low and low to high. Mania is characterized by highs, while sadness is characterized by lows. Your mood swings may be mixed, leaving you feeling both elated and melancholy at the same moment.

People with bipolar illness can experience periods of extreme happiness and vigor, as well as bouts of extreme sadness, hopelessness, and sluggishness. They normally feel normal in between those periods. The highs and lows of mood can be thought of as two “poles” of mood, which is why it’s named “bipolar” disorder.

Bipolar disorder manifests itself in a variety of ways. Many of these symptoms might also be caused by other illnesses, making it difficult to diagnose this ailment.

The symptoms of bipolar illness are split into two categories: mania and depression.

7 Symptoms of Mania

Other symptoms might accompany mania, but these are seven of the most common ones:

1. Being excessively happy or “high” for an extended period.

2. A reduction in the need for sleep

3. Speaking quickly, frequently with racing thoughts

4. A restless or impulsive state of mind

5. Being prone to distraction

6. Having an excessive amount of faith in your abilities.

7. Engaging in high-risk behavior, such as impulsive sex, gambling with one’s life savings, or going on major shopping sprees.

7 Symptoms of Depression

Depression, like mania, can create a variety of symptoms, but here are seven of the most common signs of depression in people with bipolar disorder:

1. Being depressed or hopeless for an extended period

2. Isolating oneself from friends and family

3. Losing interest in once-favorite activities

4. A significant shift in one’s appetite

5. Experiencing extreme exhaustion or a lack of energy

6. Having memory, concentration, or decision-making issues

7. Considering or attempting suicide, or having a death obsession

Unless you have a severe case of mania, the signs of bipolar illness might be difficult to detect. Hypomanic people may feel more enthusiastic than usual, more confident and full of ideas, and able to function on less sleep. These are items about which almost no one complains.

If you are sad, you are more likely to seek help, but your doctor may not notice the manic side.
