What Is Phantom Pregnancy?

Expectant parents frequently find pregnancy to be a joyful time. In rare situations, women mistakenly believe they are pregnant, only to discover that their symptoms are caused by something other than pregnancy.

False pregnancy, also known as phantom pregnancy, is a condition in which a woman believes she is pregnant when she is not. The symptoms might linger for months or even years, leading you to believe you’re pregnant.

A fake pregnancy is typically identical to a real pregnancy in every manner except for the absence of a baby.

Causes

The following are some of the possible causes of pseudocyesis symptoms:

1. After a miscarriage or other pregnancy loss, an overwhelming desire to become pregnant may produce a hormonal imbalance, causing pregnancy symptoms to develop.

2. Other physical indicators, such as weight gain, gas, or tumors, along with psychological pregnancy delusions can lead a woman to feel she is pregnant.

3. Other physical and hormonal reasons, such as pituitary tumors or ovarian/uterine cysts or growths, as well as a desire to become pregnant, could lead to pseudocyesis or phantom pregnancy in a woman.

4. A history of infertility, a history of pregnancy loss, a history of depression or mental illness, and/or a history of trauma, sexual assault, or spousal abuse are all possible causes of phantom pregnancy.

Symptoms

Pseudocyesis is characterized by the belief that you are pregnant, as well as classic pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, morning sickness, and vomiting, as well as decreased appetite, abdominal distention, weight gain, loss of menstrual period, “quickening,” and sensations of baby kicks, among others.

Treatment

Testing findings or an ultrasound confirming that they are not pregnant may be enough for some persons suffering pseudocyesis to alleviate many of their pregnancy symptoms.

However, even proof that they are not pregnant does not persuade many persons with pseudocyesis. In such cases, they may need to be treated by a psychiatrist or psychologist.
