Why Does Pregnancy Make Your Skin And Lips Dry?

When you’re pregnant, your body undergoes numerous transformations. Skin can become dull and dry as hormone levels fluctuate, and your growing baby consumes a huge percentage of daily nutrition, making the “pregnancy glow” a lie. Throughout these nine months, dry, itchy skin and chapped lips are common. The skin barrier might become damaged during pregnancy when the skin stretches, allowing more moisture to escape. Your skin may get thinner and drier as a result of this. When you’re pregnant, fluctuating hormone levels might also affect your skin’s quality.

Here are a few reasons why pregnancy makes your skin and lips dry.

1. Retention of water

Water retention can produce dry skin, despite what it may appear to be. Increased amounts of the hormone vasopressin cause your body to retain water during pregnancy, resulting in swelling and bloating. Excessive swelling can cause the skin to strain and become dry and damaged.

2. Inadequate water consumption

During pregnancy, your body requires more fluids, and the amount required grows as your baby grows. If you don’t drink enough water, you could develop dehydration symptoms including dry lips and skin.

Dehydration can also be caused by increased vomiting and diarrhea, which are common during pregnancy. Those who suffer from severe morning sickness may not be able to absorb enough fluids, which could explain your dry lips and face.

3. Increased blood volume

When you’re expecting, a spike in blood volume could be one of the reasons you have dry skin.

Increased blood sugar levels can overwork the kidneys, resulting in frequent urine and dehydration, which can contribute to dry lips and skin.

The skin is stretched as a result of increased blood volume and water retention. This stretching can cause skin to break and dry out.

4. Body size and shape changes

During pregnancy, your body goes through a lot of changes, including rapid growth to support your growing baby. Your skin loses suppleness and moisture as it stretches to accommodate a growing baby.
