Yellow Fever: Causes And Symptoms

Yellow fever is a virus spread by mosquito bites in regions of South America and Africa. Mosquitoes, specifically Aedes and Haemagogus species, transmit the virus. The yellow fever virus, when transmitted to humans, can cause damage to the liver and other internal organs, as well as death.

Yellow fever is characterized by a fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting in moderate cases. Yellow fever, on the other hand, can be deadly, causing difficulties with the heart, liver, and kidneys as well as bleeding. The more severe form of yellow fever can kill up to half of the persons who contract it.

Causes

Yellow fever is caused by a flavivirus. Yellow fever is caused by a virus carried by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Mosquitoes thrive in and around human settlements, breeding in even the purest water. The yellow fever virus is most usually found in humans and monkeys. Mosquitoes spread the virus from monkeys to people and vice versa.

The virus enters the mosquito’s bloodstream and circulates before settling in the salivary glands when it bites a human or a monkey sick with yellow fever. When an infected mosquito bites another monkey or person, the virus enters the bloodstream of the host, potentially causing sickness.

Symptoms

Yellow fever is named for two of its most noticeable symptoms: fever and skin yellowing. Yellowing is caused by hepatitis, a condition that damages the liver.

1. Acute stage symptoms

The individual may experience the following symptoms in the early, acute stage: vomiting, a high temperature, a headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, shivers or chills, and nausea are all symptoms of the flu.

The symptoms normally go away in 7 to 10 days, but about 15% of the people progress to the second stage or toxic stage.

2. Toxic stage

The signs and symptoms are more severe, and they could be fatal. Recurrent fever, vomiting, occasionally with blood, liver failure, delirium, seizures, and coma, abdominal pain, jaundice, exhaustion, kidney failure, arrhythmias, hemorrhage, and bleeding from the nose, mouth, and eyes are only a few of the symptoms.
