The surgical strike on September 29, 2016, was a masterstroke by the Indian Army and Government to teach the world a lesson: “Don’t mistake our patience for incompetence.” Aditya Dhar’s film URI- The Surgical Strike is another masterstroke that has been reviving memories since January 11, 2019.
Here are a few takeaways from the film:
1. Learn from your mistakes and triumph over them
The first chapter (The Three Sisters) describes how the Indian Army was attacked by terrorists in Manipur, with a large number of casualties. The Indian Army defeats the terrorists by invading their land, thanks to proper planning and effective leadership.
2. Be Flexible with Hi-Pots
When Major Vihaan (a Hi-Pot employee) decides to retire early due to family obligations, the PM (let’s call him the CXO) understands his desire and offers an alternative method to avoid losing a Hi-Pot. We frequently fail to provide alternatives for retaining talent. To avoid missing out on giving alternatives to retain talent, firms must have alternate plans/roles for retaining Hi-Pots.
3. Emotions are just as essential as expertise
During the planning for the Surgical Strike, Major Vihaan expresses an interest in forming a team of soldiers who were witnesses to the attack and/or were victims of it. We must remember that in the corporate world, where outcomes are driven by passion and skill is valued above all else, we must also respect and consider emotions when selecting leaders to manage organizations. When it comes to finishing a project or closing a contract, emotions often play a bigger role than pure competence.
4. Goal clarification is just as vital as role clarification
Team Alpha, Beta, Charlie, and Delta were each given the task of destroying two terrorist launch platforms. Their duties were apparent in terms of which team they belonged to, as well as who would be the cover and sniper, but most importantly, the GOAL was plain. Setting goals for the teams makes it easier to meet the objectives and involve all members.
5. Never leave an issue half-solved
find and eradicate the root cause: Vihaan, Major Finding the source of the terror and killing the main terrorist in the attack. When confronted with an issue, one should always endeavor to address it, but also ensure that the main cause is eliminated, as a fast cure may cause the problem to recur. So, figure out what’s causing the issue and fix it.
