So many lessons we wish we had learned when we were younger and more capable of appreciating and applying them. The issue about wisdom, and frequently life lessons in general, is that we only learn them after we’ve needed them.
Here are 5 life lessons to learn now
1. You won’t be able to please everyone
You don’t need everyone’s approval or even to like you. It’s natural to want to fit in, to be liked, respected, and valued, but this should never come at the expense of your integrity or happiness. Other individuals are unable to provide you with the validation you desire. That’s got to come from within.
Speak up, stand firm in your convictions, express yourself when necessary, demand respect, and hold true to your principles.
2. You don’t always get your wish for
We have all of these expectations; predefined images of what our “perfect” life should be like, but all too frequently, it is not the reality of our lives. No matter how meticulously you plan and how hard you work, things don’t always go as planned, and that’s just fine.
Sometimes we have to fail in order to find the proper path, and other times we only need to try a few things before we find the right path.
3. It’s okay to not know things
We have this perception that expressing our shortcomings or uncertainty carries some sort of stigma or shame, but we can’t possibly know everything. No one has all the answers.
Nobody knows everything. It’s quite acceptable to say, “I don’t know.” Pretending to be flawless does not imply that you are. That is life; we learn as we go.
4. It is not about what we accomplish that makes us happy
We spend a significant portion of our lives achieving, seeking to attain, and competing to win. And we believe that our happiness is determined by our accomplishments.
However, no amount of success will make you happy until and until you are truly happy from the inside out. It is not about what we accomplish that makes us happy.
5. We must have faith in our instincts
We often disregard our gut instincts. Sometimes intuition is as loud as someone screaming in your ear, and other times it is more subtle.
We save a lot of time and trouble if we slow down, take our time, allow things to clear up, and listen.
