Be a role model for your younger siblings

While we are busy making our lives better, struggling hard to get the best job out there, we never notice how our little siblings look up at us. As young aspiring kids, they too wish to achieve success and be praised by society. They might even ask for some things that you get but for different reasons. You may need a laptop because you need it but your little brother or sister might want it just because you get it, and they want to enact you. We may get annoyed that they are making a pointless demand and scold them for that, but they only wish to be more like you. Do not fail to see that.

As your sibling grows up along with passing years, he/she feels pressured about achieving the same heights as you. Since you are the elder one, you take most of the responsibilities around the house and at this point, your peer realises it is time to be responsible too. Go through this list and follow it to make sure your sibling has you as his role model: –

  1. Be patient. Your parents might scold your younger sibling if he makes a mistake, but you are the who should get him to understand with love.
  2. Use decent language. Do not use slang while talking to him. Don’t feel petty to say ‘sorry or thank you’. This will only make him respect you even more.
  3. Spend time with them. You may be always busy, but use your free time to know what your sibling is going through. Make them feel close to you like a best friend.
  4. Don’t nag them. You only want the best for him. But don’t force or constantly nag them to complete their tasks. They already have parents for that. You are the more understanding person here.
  5. Guide them and share your experience. As elder sibling, you must look after and guide you, little brother or sister, to the right path. Share your guidance with them so that they don’t make the same mistakes you did in your life.

Lastly, love them and be affectionate. Making them understand with love and care is effective than scolding and using force. At times, you may have to resort to being strict, but use that only when necessary. Do not ridicule and compare their life with yours. That will never make you a role model and will create hatred in their hearts.
