Cyrus S. Poonawalla is the founder of the Serum Institute of India and is renowned as the King of Vaccines. Poonawalla Group is his company, and he is the chairman. Cyrus created the Serum Institute of India in 1966 to produce vaccinations at a lower cost. The Serum Institute of India was granted WHO recognition in 1994. The Serum Institute of India has become a prominent vaccine supplier by 2020.
1. Cyrus was born into a Parsi family, with a horse-breeder for a father. Cyrus began his business as a horse breeder as well, as per India shorts reports.
2. The family-owned the Poonawalla Stud Farms and ran a horse racing company.
3. He was married to Villoo Poonawalla, who died of heart arrest in 2010.
4. Cyrus attended Bishops School in Pune for his elementary education.
5. Cyrus received his bachelor’s degree from Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) in 1966 and a Ph.D. from Pune University in 1988 for his thesis “Improved Technology in the Manufacture of Specific Anti-toxins and its Socio-Economic Impact on the Society.”
6. At the age of 20, Cyrus began experimenting with automobiles and, with the help of a friend developed a $120 prototype sports car based on the Jaguar D-type; unfortunately, they had the financial resources to commercialize such vehicles, as per startup talky reports.
7. In 1966, Cyrus launched the Serum Institute of India (SII) with the goal of producing life-saving immuno-biologicals in India.
8. Cyrus Poonawalla was awarded the Padma Shri in 2003 for his contributions to medicine.
