Luka Modric, a midfielder for the Spanish team Real Madrid, was born on September 9, 1985, in Croatia. He serves as the team’s captain for Croatia. He is the greatest Croatian football player of all time and is highly recognized for his midfield. In addition to being the first Croatian player to win the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award, he gained prominence for leading Croatia to the World Cup Final.
Early in his life, Modric was a refugee child. They had to flee to Zadar because his grandfather was killed by the Serb army and his home was burned on the fire. He then started playing football and attracted notice. Josip Bajlo, the head coach of NK Zadar of the First Division, spotted the youngster playing at the refugee guesthouse and decided to enroll him in the team’s football academy.
According to a close friend of Modric’s, Luka was toughened up as a child by the battle with the Serb separatists that lasted from 1991 to 1995. In 2000, he moved from Zadar to Dinamo Zagreb, and in 2008, he joined Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League. He was signed by Real Madrid in 2012, but Modric’s reputation in Croatia was damaged by his evidence supporting Zdravko Mamic’s cause during Mamic’s multi million-euro corruption trial.
When he led Croatia to their first World Cup and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or, any remaining resentment toward him vanished. After being honored with the Ballon d’Or and Best FIFA Men’s Player Awards, he is now regarded as the national hero of his own nation.
