How Businesses May Support Employees’ Professional Development

Particularly in the wake of the ‘great resignation,’ employee retention is more crucial than ever.

Opportunities for professional advancement are a crucial component of keeping employees satisfied, in addition to the standard demands of employees like flexibility, workplace wellbeing, and a fair compensation and benefits package.

Unfortunately, employees may not be able to advance professionally if they are simply provided with training sometimes or not at all.

The “half-life of a skill” has plummeted from 10 to 15 years to just five years in the computer industry, according to Evanna Kearins, SVP of marketing for the EMEA area at tech education company Pluralsight.

What does professional advancement entail?

Career development should be a top priority for businesses when determining how to keep their staff members motivated and content.

However, it might be simple to limit your thinking about professional advancement to formal position changes or official promotions. Kearins emphasized the need to develop more strategies for fostering staff development.

“Employees may access new possibilities to work on various projects or with different technologies by learning and developing new abilities while still in their current roles, which will help them grow their knowledge in new areas.” Evanna Kearins Said

Challenges in advancing your career

The State of Upskilling 2022 study from Pluralsight states that 61% of the employees polled are too busy to prioritize upskilling. Over 40 percent more than in 2021.

“Setting aside time throughout the workweek for learning may be quite helpful in ensuring that every employee takes advantage of the given growth opportunities,” according to Kearins.

Employees’ declining interest in their jobs may also be a sign that they feel constrained in their professional development. According to research from Pluralsight, 40% of respondents who quit their jobs did so due to a lack of professional advancement.
