The Indian Navy Ranks Explained: Read Here

For the determined Sailor or Officer, there are practically endless options to make a Navy career even more noteworthy. The Navy is unique in that once you’ve started your career, there’s just one path to go from there: up. The Indian Navy is only the first rung on the career ladder. The Navy provides a professional support system in which you will be trained and groomed to progress up the career ladder as you spend time in the Navy.

The Navy has a very fair and equitable promotion system, which recognizes and rewards your hard work, sincerity, talents, and aptitude

Officers and sailors in the Navy have the following symbolic rank structure:-

Admiral of the Fleet

The highest honorary five-star rank is Admiral of the Fleet. This title was bestowed on a nobleman by a monarch for significant military service. An officer from the Indian Navy has yet to receive this rank.

Admiral

In the Indian Navy, Admiral is a four-star naval flag officer rank. It is the Indian Navy’s highest active rank. The three-star rank of vice admiral is followed by admiral.

Vice Admiral

In the Indian Navy, the vice admiral is the third-highest rank. In the Indian Navy, this is the second-highest active rank. The Vice-admiral is one rank below the four-star rank of admiral, which is held by the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS).

Rear Admiral

In the Indian Navy, a rear admiral is a two-star flag officer rank. It is the Indian Navy’s third-highest active rank. The rank of rear admiral is one star above that of commodore and one star below that of vice admiral.

Commodore

In the Indian Navy, Commodore is a one-star rank. The rank of Commodore is one level above captain and one level below the two-star rank of rear admiral.

Captain

In the Indian Navy, the captain is a rank. Captains are higher than Commanders but lower than Commodores. In the Indian Army, it is equivalent to colonel, while in the Indian Air Force, it is equivalent to group captain.

Commander

The rank of the commander is a common one among naval officers. The position or title of the commander is frequently used in other official organizations, such as police forces. This naval rank is known as frigate captain in several countries.

Lieutenant Commander

In many navies, the rank of lieutenant commander is a commissioned officer rank. The rank is higher than that of a lieutenant but lower than that of a commander.

Lieutenant

Lieutenant is a commissioned officer rank in the navies and coast guards of numerous countries. It’s the most senior of the junior officer grades.

Sub Lieutenant

A naval sub-lieutenant is a commissioned or subordinate officer below the rank of lieutenant.
