Types Of Leaves In India You Should Know About: Part 1

Let’s take a deeper look at the many varieties of leaves available from Indian companies:

1. Casual Leave

Casual leaves are the most common type of leave taken by employees. People use office leaves for unforeseen circumstances where they may need to take a day or two off work to attend to personal affairs. With the employer’s agreement, most organizations give up to 3-5 days of casual leave per month.

i. Half-day Leave

Half-day leaves, as the name implies, are those taken for only half of the day, i.e. the employee may take off either the first or second half of the day. This form of leave is useful for those who need to do modest duties such as going to the bank or attending PTMs, allowing them to balance their personal and professional lives. Isn’t it great for work-life balance?

ii. One-day vacation

One-day leaves, the most prevalent sort of leave in the workplace, are taken by employees when they need a short break or a day to themselves to take care of personal obligations.

2. Paid/Vacation/Privilege Leave

Privilege leaves, also known as earned leaves, are paid leaves earned by employees on a yearly basis as they work for a company. The number of privilege leaves varies by organization, but an employee is normally entitled to 18 privilege leaves during which they can skip work and relax. Unless there is an emergency, employees must obtain prior agreement from their employers before taking a privileged leave. This form of leave is a dream for all employees because they can encash them if they do not want to utilize them or amass them to take a long break when necessary.

3. Days of sick/medical Leave

Sick or medical leaves, as the name suggests, are utilized when an employee becomes unwell and is unable to work. After a certain amount of time working for a company, an employee is entitled to sick leave. Each company gives its employees a varied number of sick days. Because sickness is unforeseeable, no previous notification is required when applying for sick/medical leaves. Some employers, however, request a medical certificate from the doctor’s office attesting to the employee’s illness.
