A psychiatrist is a mental health specialist who practises medicine. Psychiatrists might specialise in a variety of areas within that specialty.

Child and adolescent psychiatrists are specially trained to work with children and adolescents. Patients under the age of 18 are treated by these psychiatrists. Psychiatrists who specialise in addiction treatment are known as addiction psychiatrists. Patients who are addicted to drugs or alcohol are likely to have other mental health issues as well. A neuropsychiatrist is a psychiatrist who specialises on mental illnesses caused by brain injuries, diseases, or difficulties with the nerve system.
