IT project management is the process of planning, coordinating, and distributing duties to achieve an organization’s IT objectives. Software development, hardware installation or upgrades, network upgrades, business analytics, and data management initiatives are all examples of IT projects. The major responsibility of an IT project manager is to oversee the design and implementation of a project while also supporting the daily operations of the technology department.

What is the process of IT project management?

The project life cycle specifies the technical scope and deliverables for IT initiatives. A typical IT project management life cycle includes the following stages:

1. Identifying

The identification process begins once you’ve decided on a project to manage. The first stage of the project life cycle consists of identifying the project’s context and presenting proposals for consideration. During this stage, a sponsor requests or receives a business case, which includes a brief description of the goal and need of the project, a cost estimate, a timeframe, and any potential risks. The sponsor ultimately determines whether or not to proceed with the project.

2. Initiate

When a project acquires official funding, the second stage of its life begins. During this stage, the IT project manager may also analyze the entire project to confirm its viability. The IT project manager defines all tasks when creating the work plan to ensure smooth execution. The main output of this phase is the project charter, which is a brief document that describes the entire project.

The following may be included in the initial phase:

Identifying the stakeholders
Setting the project’s timetable
Justifying the project’s necessity
Identifying the major deliverables, assumptions, strengths, and weaknesses of the project

3. Definition

After the proposal has been approved, the project-defining phase begins. This is the most crucial phase because it is when you develop and finish the project’s goals and demands. For example, you may establish a target of attracting 1,000 visitors per day to your site over the next three months or getting 40% of free-trial customers to upgrade to premium plans in one month. This allows you to establish the project scope and create an effective plan.
