How To Maintain Long Distance Relationship With Mother And Daughter

Find Common Interests:

Spending quality time together while exploring shared hobbies and interests strengthens the mother-daughter bond. For example, when we get together, we almost always squeeze in a yoga lesson. We talk on the phone about novels we’re reading when we’re apart. Are you and your mother/daughter not interested in the same things? Then go try something new for both of you!

Mood Management:

While many of us are strong and accomplished women, we can all recall times when we were irrational or temperamental, especially with our mother or daughter. Unfortunately, we frequently reserve our worst moods and tempers for individuals we care about. We’ve gotten good at recognizing each other’s terrible moods. We call attention to it and then allow “the grumpy one” the space she requires.

Give and Receive Sound Advice:

While we frequently value each other’s counsel, it can be difficult for mothers and daughters to be objective, and feelings can be hurt if advice is ignored. Furthermore, advice can sometimes feel like interference or criticism to the person receiving it. Learn to welcome each other’s ideas without dismissing them; at the same time, allow each other the freedom and support to follow our instincts, even if it means going in a different direction.

Schedule Time to Connect:

Our lives become separated as our children grow up and move away, and it is challenging to preserve our relationship when fast phone conversations on the fly become the norm. While phone conversations, e-mails, and occasional messages are typical methods of communication, we’ve discovered that weekly “Skype dates” allow us to block out distractions and create time for real conversation.

Keep Your Lips Shut:

When the daughter is a youngster, she often requests that her mother maintain a secret, and when both mothers and daughters are adults, secrets can flow both ways. When one person requests the other not to tell family members about something they discussed, problems can arise. However, as in all meaningful partnerships, the capacity to keep intimate exchanges private is crucial to long-term trust.
