Sexting is the act of sending sexually explicit messages, images, or videos to another person over a mobile phone, computer, or another digital device. Sexting is defined as the use of nudity or simulated sex actions in images and videos. Text messages discussing or proposing sex actions are also included.
Parents, schools, and law enforcement are concerned about the chances that their children will send or receive sexually explicit content as they increasingly carry cellphones and use tablets, social media, apps, and messaging. Sexting is frequently used as a joke, a means of gaining attention, or as a form of flirtation. Parents should talk with their children about the risks and what they should do if or when they are pressured to join.
A photo exchanged between two people can go viral in a matter of seconds. Teens may believe it would be kept private, only to find out later that it has been extensively shared with their friends, with potentially fatal results. Arrests of minors who uploaded images of themselves or other underage teens are among them.
When photographs and words are spread beyond the intended recipient, bullying, harassment, and humiliation are common problems. There can be serious emotional and social ramifications, including teen suicides as a result of their images being disseminated.
According to a 2008 poll conducted by the American National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, half of the teen girls mentioned peer pressure as a cause for sending graphic texts. Peer pressure is also a worry, according to the survey, with 23 percent of teen females and 24 percent of teen boys saying they were pressured to email or upload sexual content by their friends.
A youngster can use a nude photo of another teen as a trophy to flaunt their relationship with their classmates. Teens may upload a picture of themselves to flirt with a potential partner or to receive compliments from their peers. Some people may submit a photo as a joke or as a challenge.
Couples may send each other images as confirmation of their commitment or as part of their romantic or sexual activities. Sexting images of other teenagers might be used to humiliate or bully them. This could happen after a relationship ends, or the images could be captured inadvertently in a toilet or locker room.
