Domestic violence is violence on someone from their own domestic group. It can include partners, immediate family members and relatives. When there is a close relationship between the abuser and the victim, the term domestic violence is used. It usually occurs when there is a power gap between their relationship or the victim is dependent on the offender.
Domestic abuse or violence can be in any form. It can be either physical, sexual or even psychological abuse. Domestic violence can also be a child abuse, senior abuse, honour based violence like forced marriages, honour killings and many more.
In case of domestic violence, the majority of women fall victim to domestic abuse. Additionally, men, children and elderly people can also be victims. Domestic violence is seen in almost all levels of society and in various population groups. Domestic abuse is more common in the structural systems which still follow gender or any other inequalities.
Domestic violence is on the rise since the pandemic. This is so because of stress, disruption in social and protective networks. It has increased economic hardships considerably and has also reduced the access to various services which has caused a sharp rise in domestic violence.
During the pandemic, in order to contain the spread of Covid-19 infection, there has been a need for isolation, restricted movements and measures to stay at home. This has increased the chances of domestic violence as family members spent more time together and as there has also been an increase in household stress.
