Why Does Jealousy Occur In A Relationship? Know How It Affects Us

Almost everyone has experienced it at some point in their lives. It could be a minor nuisance or a burning sensation inside you that makes you feel like you are about to explode. Jealousy is the fear that someone else will try to take what is rightfully yours. Mild jealousy is regarded as an instinctive reaction that causes us to desire to safeguard what we believe is ours.

Why does jealousy occur?

In a relationship, jealousy might stem from your own vulnerabilities rather than your partner’s actions. Fear of abandonment or betrayal, excessive possessiveness or a desire for control, having a misunderstanding of ownership over a spouse and having false expectations about marriage are all grounds for jealousy.

It can also be because of constant worrying about losing someone or something significant and reliving a painful experience of abandonment in the past that causes jealousy to occur in a relationship. Low self-esteem or a negative self-image might also cause jealousy. It can be difficult to trust that your partner loves and values you if you don’t feel attractive or confident.

How it affects our relationship?

While some jealousy may be a natural or instinctive reaction to the prospect of losing a loved one, when jealousy takes over in non-threatening situations, it may have a devastating effect on a relationship. As the jealous individual becomes increasingly scared, furious, and controlling, abnormal jealousy wreaks havoc on the relationship.

Trust and respect are the foundations of any healthy and happy relationship. A person suffering from jealousy is unable to trust or respect the person they are with, as well as their personal limits. This will lead to additional disagreements, especially if the jealous person makes demands and questions the other person all the time.

One of the most damaging consequences of jealousy is that it can lead to a relationship restricting each other’s independence. When this happens, people can lose their originality and strength in the relationship.

Jealousy might eventually turn into hatred and a defensive attitude. This practice will eventually suffocate whatever feelings of love and affection that once existed.

We do not have to become our emotions; they are merely what we feel. Consider the jealousy you’re experiencing as a sign that something in you deserves your attention; bring it to your attention and utilize it to effect positive change in your relationships with yourself or those closest to you.
