You were simply combing your hair or stroking your head when suddenly, ouch: You struck a strange small lump and it aches a lot.
We’re sorry to share the bad news, but it appears that scalp acne—which resembles the lumps that might appear on your face, back, or chest—is a real thing.
Combing, brushing, or styling your hair can be uncomfortable or irritating if you have scalp acne that has spread to your hairline or beneath the hair itself. Additionally, attempting to conceal it with a hat will probably just make matters worse.
What causes scalp acne?
According to Purvisha Patel, MD, a dermatologist from Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Associates in Memphis, “pimples can develop on your body or on your face when a hair follicle becomes clogged with oil or dirt. Inflammation of the pore brought on by the obstruction might result in redness, discomfort, or irritation.”
How to get rid of scalp acne
Acne on the scalp is not merely bothersome. The lumps may enlarge and develop into cysts if untreated, which may necessitate draining and may potentially leave scarring. Therefore, it’s important to treat such pimples quickly and take all necessary precautions to prevent them from returning.
The bumps should not be picked at or squeezed, despite the fact that it may be difficult to do so. Similarly, Dr. Patel advises against brushing close to the region and caution against using too much pressure during shampooing. In addition to causing additional acne, popping a pimple might also transmit germs to neighboring pores or hair follicles. Additionally, it may make scarring more likely.
