The Leaning Tower of Pisa located in the city of Pisa, Italy, is famous for its prominent tilt to one side. The construction of the tower was started in 1173 and was completed in 1372.
According to the Wikipedia site, the original Tower stands tall at 60 meters height. The height of the tower on the lowest side is around 55.86 meters and 56.67 meters on the highest side. There are around 296 steps to reach the top floor of the leaning tower.
The tower started to lean during the construction due to the soft ground which could not bear the weight of the structure, however, the lean became noticeable when construction of the second storey started and it worsened through the completion of the structure. The lean of the tower was about 5.5 degrees in the 1990s hence restoration work was started to reduce the tilt.
Today the slope of the tower is around 3.97 degrees. It was constructed using white marbles. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is not the only leaning tower in the city of Pisa, there are two other towers that also lean, The bell tower of the church of St.Nichola and The bell tower at the church of St. Michele dei Scalzi.
The tower was a military base during World War II. In 1987, the tower was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The region of Pisa was hit by at least 4 strong earthquakes since 1280, however, this vulnerable tower survived.
The researchers came to the conclusion that the Tower was able to withstand the tremors due to dynamic soil-structure interaction. The tower represents the bell tower of the nearby marble Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and hence seven huge bells were located on its top.
