1. Irom Chanu Sharmila
The longest hunger strike record which lasted for 500 weeks was done by the Iron Lady of Manipura, Irom Chanu Sharmila. She went under a hunger strike due to the act of the Indian Armed Forces to kill or shoot at the sight of their warranted will.
2. Mahatma Gandhi
The Father of India, Mahatma Gandhi undertook a hunger strike in the Yerwada Jail in Pune to protest against the British government’s decision of separating India’s electoral system by caste.
3. Bhagat Singh
Bhagat Singh was a resistance to the British Rule over India and he has led many protests in prison. He used hunger strikes to express his grievances for better hygienic standards in the political prison.
4. Jatindra Nath Das
The Indian activist, Jatindra Nath Das went under a hunger strike for 63 days in order to protect the political prisoners from injustice.
5. Jawar Mohammed
Jawar Mohammed undertook a hunger strike to demand the release of the Oromo, the leaders, and members of the opposition political parties, and to end the mistreatment by the security forces of the prisoner’s families.
6. Solange Fernex
Solange Fernex advocated policy to raise the awareness of the impact of Nuclear power on the environment. She led a 40 days hunger strike to encourage the public to vote against the rejection of the nuclear power implementation.
7. Bobby Sands
The Irish activist, Bobby Sands, undertook a hunger strike with the Republican prisoners to protest the removal of special category status.
