A humectant-based solution is applied first, followed by an occlusive balm, creating what is known as a “moisture sandwich.” According to dermatologist Dr. Kiran Sethi, the founder of Isya Aesthetics, “it is made to make sure that adequate water gets into the skin and none of it leaks out.” To get more hydrated and bouncy skin, use lighter, waterier products to moisturize skin before covering them with something heavier. Before using hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA, or glycerin serum to seal in the benefits, Dr. Sethi prefers to use a face mist first.
Others prefer to spray a second layer on top before applying a moisturizer, a balm, and finally oil. This is also effective for dry limbs. According to Dr. Aakriti Mehra of SkinGenious in Mumbai, you should start with damp skin that has just come out of the shower and apply a glycerin- or hyaluronic acid-based serum before massaging a moisturizer and finally an oil into the skin to seal everything in.
How can someone utilize a moist sandwich if they regularly consume active ingredients?
“As the occlusive phase of a technique known as ‘slugging,’ some individuals prefer to use petroleum jelly (made popular by Redditors and Palermino too). If you have dry, dehydrated skin that is not prone to acne, this will work for you. Petroleum jelly may not be the best choice if you have oily skin that is congested since it might clog your pores,” advises Dr. Mehra.
