The most famous jet airliner Boeing 747 had made its first flight more than a half a century ago. It is well known as the Queen of the Skies, the Jumbo Jet and the Whale.
In 1963, there was a study on strategic transport aircrafts by the United States Air Force and there was a need for a much larger and capable aircraft. As a result, the Boeing Commercial Airplanes manufactured the large and wide body airliner, Boeing 747. Joe Sutter left the 737-development program design to work for the 747 which was the first win aisle airliner.
In the year 1966, Pan Am had ordered around 25 Boeing 747-100 aircrafts and later its JT9D engine was developed by Pratt & Whitney with high-bypass turbofan.
The first Boeing 747 was rolled out of the Everett Plant on 30th September, 1968 and on 9th February 1969, it took off for the first time. In December of the same year it was officially certified.
The Jumbo Jet, in its three travel classes, accommodates 366 passengers. It’s wing sweep is 37.50 which permits a Mach 0.85 cruise speed. The heavy weight is handled by the four landing gears and four wheel bogies each.
In order to convert to a freighter airplane, the partial double-deck aircraft was designed with an elevated cockpit. Cargo front doors were installed because it was initially built for supersonic transport.
The government and military variants such as VC-25, E-4 Emergency Airborne Command Post and Shuttle Carrier Aircraft use Boeing 747.
