The Burj Khalifa is a mega tall skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, well known for being the current world’s highest skyscraper. It is also Dubai’s most popular tourist attraction.
Burj Khalifa translates to “Khalifa Tower.” Formerly known as Burj Dubai or Dubai Tower, the name was changed to Burj Khalifa on January 4, 2010, when the tower formally opened. Burj Khalifa and other construction projects in Dubai were once on the verge of being halted due to the attack of the Financial Crisis, but neighboring Adu Dhabi provided funds to Dubai during this difficult time, which is the main reason for Dubai to rename the tower, Burj Khalifa.
Burj Khalifa’s architectural height is 828 meters or 2717 ft, measured to the top of the spire, as the spire is considered an architectural part of the skyscraper.
Before 2010, the height of the Burj Khalifa was kept secret to prevent it from being surpassed by possible competitors. Finally, the owner Emaar stated that the normal height of the Burj Khalifa is 828 meters, with a total height of 829.8 meters to its tip (there is a 1.7-meter tiny needle above the top of the spire at 828 meters), making it the highest skyscraper in the world in all categories.
Burj Khalifa was designed by Adrian Smith from Chicago-based architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Emaar Properties, a well-known local real estate firm that has built many other skyscrapers in Dubai, was responsible for the development of the Burj Khalifa. Samsung Building, a Samsung Group business, was in charge of the construction of the Burj Khalifa.
The tower is built on a shamrock-shaped footprint, which gives it the appearance of a letter ‘Y’ when viewed from above in the air; this form is derived from Hymenocallis, also known as the desert lily, a desert plant; the tower’s cross-section area gradually decreases as it increases.
The number of floors in the Burj Khalifa is usually recognized as 163, but a 2717-foot structure couldn’t possibly have only 163 levels, right? That’s because the floors above level 163 and below the spire serve as the spire’s base construction, which isn’t inhabited and isn’t used for mechanical purposes, but it takes up 46 levels, giving the building a total of 209 floors.
Every year on New Year’s Eve, a or laser show is held on the Burj Khalifa, attracting thousands of spectators on the ground and millions more watching online.
