Dras is a tiny town in the Kargil district of Ladakh’s union territory in northern India. It is the second-highest populated site in India, standing at 3,280 meters (10,761 ft) above sea level. The town is surrounded by Himalayan hills and is on the side of the Dras River, a source of the Indus.
Dras has severe weather all year, with warm temperatures from -45°C (-49°F) in the winter to 30°C (86°F) in the summer. Nonetheless, Dras becomes the coldest spot in India during the winter months, from November to February.
Dras’ severe winter weather is caused by its high elevation and position in the Himalayan area. The town is one of the coldest inhabited areas on the planet due to the fierce winds that blow through it and the frequent snowfall. Dras’s temperature frequently falls below freezing, and the town is blanketed in a thick covering of snow during the winter.
